King Arthur was the lone African Lion among 18 animals facing an uncertain future when a Nebraska zoo was shut down by the USDA due to animal abuse and safety violations. Undernourished and underweight, King Arthur was doing his best to survive the cold Nebraska winters. After rescued he lived a life “fit for a king” at TWAS, King Arthur enjoys being with other Lions in the habitat, and would give an occasional friendly “aowwww” to the humans on the observation deck 30 feet above him. Arthur was known for his beautiful mane.

Molly and Betty Jean Original

In 2016 Female Syrian Brown Bear, Molly, came to live at the Sanctuary with 11 other Bears as a result of the State of Ohio’s new law restricting ownership of dangerous wild animals. Molly was confiscated along with two other adult Syrian Brown Bears from a breeder that failed to come into compliance with the new law. Upon being confiscated, Molly and the other Bears were held temporarily at a state-run wildlife facility, which is where she gave birth to a single female cub named Betty Jean. All 12 Bears were rescued by The Wild Animal Sanctuary and Molly and her cub now live in a spacious 20 acre habitat! This is the first time that Molly was able to keep and raise one of her cubs.

Eddy, the Black Leopard Born to Gina and Sam, Eddy was a black Leopard that never had to know the dreadful life his parents endured along with hundreds of other exotic animals at Colton, California’s infamous Tiger Rescue facility. When Gina arrived at TWAS, she was already pregnant and soon came Eddy. Eddy lead a charmed life. He had lots of love from the humans and dogs he had grown up with, was the star of Animal Planet’s “Growing Up Black Leopard,” and loved to play with other Leopards in their specially designed enclosure.

Mako the White female Tiger along with sixteen other Lions, Tigers and big cat hybrids along with two Grizzly Bears were rescued from a notorious pay-to-play-with-cubs facility in Indiana that was cited for dozens of violations of the Animal Welfare and Endangered Species Acts. In their previous life, Mako and the others spent their lives in small cages that only had gravel on which to walk. Mako's closest companion is fellow rescuee, female White African Lion, Snow Lei, and they are inseparable. Now at the Sanctuary, Mako, Snow Lei and all of the others are living in grassy, large-acreage habitats totally free from any human exploitation.
