Why We’re Building a New Carnivore Nutrition Center

At The Wild Animal Sanctuary, every rescued animal’s recovery begins with proper nutrition. Many arrive severely malnourished—some even suffering from conditions like metabolic bone disease caused by years of poor diets. With expert veterinary care and specialized meals, countless animals have gone from barely walking to thriving in open habitats.

However, our current Carnivore Nutrition Center was never designed for the demands we face today.

About ten years ago, while expanding our facilities for incoming rescues, we planned to build a new on-site veterinary hospital. We even purchased a metal building kit to create a 2,000 sq. ft. clinic. But as soon as construction finished, a new opportunity arose—a food partnership with Walmart that required a large-scale processing facility. Our plans quickly shifted, and the new building became the foundation of our current Carnivore Nutrition Center.

What began as a small food prep space has grown into a massive operation—processing more than 110,000 pounds of food each week to feed over 500 animals across 1,400 acres. Our staff and volunteers do everything within their power to keep up, but the limites are real. What we need now is a facility that matches the level of care these animals require—and truly deserve. That’s what a new Carnivore Nutrition Center will provide.

Project Progress & Updates

We’re already making strong progress on this vital project.

Currently, we’re in Phase 1 — pre-planning and engineering — which we expect to finish by the end of January. The county has preapproved the project, and our team of architects and engineers is finalizing design specs. Surveying and soil testing will follow soon, along with architectural renderings so construction can begin early next year.

Thanks to early supporters, we’ve raised over $200,000, funding critical technical work and laying the groundwork for what’s ahead. These early steps may be behind the scenes, but they’re essential to building a facility that will change lives.
